There are certain skills ever poker player needs in order to play effectively. Whether you play a few games every week with the guys
or you’re a hardcore fanatic, these skills are essential to your play. Perfect these skills and you’ll perfect your play.
Discipline
With
whatever game you play, if you don’t have discipline, you won’t win. It’s that simple. If you don’t have the drive - the desire -
to better your game, you won’t take down the big pots, and you won’t make the big money.
A disciplined poker player knows when
to fold their hand. Be smart. If you’re holding a good pocket pair, and there’s four suits on the board - none of which you have -
you may not have the best hand. A disciplined player will know not to throw money into a pot if they won’t win, no matter how bad
they want to.
Only with discipline will you learn. Disciplined player learn from their mistakes, and move on. If you make a mistake,
learn from it, and don’t let it affect the rest of your game. Tilt is a player’s worst enemy.
Know when to hold your hand, and
know when you should fold it. Disciplined players won’t let emotions get in the way of their game, no matter what bad beat comes their
way.
Stay focused, stay disciplined, and play your game. Do these things, and you’ll like the results.
Mathematics
True
poker sharks know the probabilities of the game like the back of their hand. By knowing your chances, you can make better, more informed,
decisions.
You need to know that you have about a 25% chance of completing your flopped flush draw. You need to know that you
have about a 12% chance of making a set out of your pocket pair. Learn the probabilities and make the right decisions.
Count
your outs. Outs are simply the cards that will make your hand a winning hand. Count your outs, multiply them by two, add one, and
that’s roughly the percentage chance you’ll hit the cards you need.
Once you know your outs, find out your pot odds. You can
find more about this here.
Psychology
A good poker player isn’t self-centered. Look at your opponents. Watch everything
they do. Look for their tells, their style of play, and consistency. Get inside their heads, and control what they think. If you have
a good hand, make them think it’s weak. If you have a bad hand, make them think it’s great. Once you control their thoughts, you control
their actions. And once you control their actions, you have them beat.
